Intervening after the shoot, the editor takes a fresh look at the writing of the film, with a view to giving meaning to the audiovisual production.
The editor is responsible for assembling all the shots and sequences in the film, in order to achieve a continuity that corresponds to the filmmaker's vision.
It's an extremely complex and vital job, with two components.
The assembler's role and tasks
The first is technical. The editor has to overcome a host of potential problems, such as false connections. He or she has to iron out all the kinks to ensure the overall coherence of the work, manage part of the post-production process, and work with the sound editors (who are tasked with a similar job, but only with the sound material collected during shooting).
The other aspect is artistic. The editor's job is to give the film its rhythm and final structure. To this end, they often work in close collaboration with the director. While in some cases editing can be a precise puzzle piecing together a clear, pre-established vision, it can also be much freer and more complex.
A film can be completely redone (from a narrative point of view) or rethought on the editing table, and the editor's role becomes that of an artist whose vision is essential to the final result.
Thanks to technical developments, the editor's work is now almost entirely digital and computerized, whereas for a long time (during the reign of traditional film) it was much more physical. In fact, the editor is the person who transforms the raw material from the shoot into film.
