The writing coordinator organizes the work of a series’ screenwriters. He or she assigns episodes, monitors the progress of the scripts, ensures the consistency of storylines and characters from one episode to the next, and passes along feedback from the production team and the broadcaster.

What does a writing coordinator do?

A series begins with a show bible, which establishes the setting, the characters, and the broad outlines of the seasons. The writing coordinator ensures that every writer is familiar with it and follows it. He or she assigns episodes, sets deadlines, and manages the writing schedule, which is aligned with the filming schedule.

With each new version, he rereads the scripts, identifies inconsistencies—such as a character who already knows something they’re not supposed to learn until three episodes later, or a setting that changes names—and has them corrected. He compiles the notes from the producer and the network and forwards them to the writers. He also keeps the show’s backstory up to date: the timeline, relationships between characters, and ongoing storylines.

On a daily soap opera, the work is done on an assembly-line basis: some writers write the story arcs, others create the episode outlines, and still others write the dialogue. The coordinator keeps the entire process moving at a pace of several episodes per week.

Writing coordinator, head writer, or showrunner: What’s the difference?

The head writer is responsible for the content: they decide on the story arcs, characters, and overall direction of the series, and rewrite as needed. The writing coordinator organizes and oversees the process: they keep the writing moving forward and ensure its consistency. In smaller teams, one person may fill both roles.

The showrunner goes a step further: he or she carries the series’ artistic vision from the writing stage all the way through to editing, working closely with the production team. Job titles vary from one production to another, and it is the contract that defines each person’s responsibilities.

Who does the writing coordinator work with?

He works every day with the series' writers and with the head writer or showrunner. He reports to the producer and consults with the network's or platform's programming executives, who approve each step.

How much does a writing coordinator earn?

In animated film production, the minimum salary for a writing coordinator is €474.40 gross per 35-hour workweek under a standard fixed-term contract, and €2,055.65 per month. The minimum salary for a head writer is €866.23 per week.

For live-action fiction,Amendment No. 19 of July 8, 2024, to the collective bargaining agreement for audiovisual production (IDCC 2642) classifies the writing coordinator as a position specific to fiction. When the writing coordinator writes episodes himself, he is also considered an author: in such cases, the law requires that his compensation be proportional to the work’s revenue (Article L131-4 of the Intellectual Property Code).

What kind of education do you need to become a writing coordinator?
