On a movie set, the shooting electrician, or electro, is responsible for setting up the lighting, under the direction of the cinematographer. He is also in charge of the power supply for the entire set.
The chief electrician is in charge of the electrical department, responsible to the chief engineer for day-to-day operations and maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment.
Role and tasks of the Chief Electrician
At the final stage of film preparation, the location scout is involved in identifying the sets previously chosen by the director. His or her work, in conjunction with that of the cinematographer, will essentially focus on the technical feasibility of shooting in each chosen set: available electrical power, possibilities of electrical connections or use of a generator...
During the shoot, he'll be responsible for everything to do with setting up electrical equipment: spotlights, cables, junction boxes, maintenance of electrical equipment. He reports directly to the director of photography, often helping him to set up his lighting. Electricians work under him, installing and operating the lighting equipment required for each shot.
