The boom operator, also known as sound assistant or boom operator, is the assistant to the cinematographer on a shoot.
Off-camera, the boom operator is the person closest to the actors during the shooting of a film. Working under the authority of a sound engineer, the boom operator assists him or her in preparing the equipment needed for sound recording.
Role and missions of the Boom Operator
He works as a sound assistant, in charge of capturing the sound of a film scene. He has to manage the constraints of the location, as well as the actors' movements in space. He takes care of the boom as well as the placement of the tie microphones. He follows the sound engineer's instructions.
