The machinist, also known as machino, brings a set or stage to life by creating and animating its scenery.
A handyman in good physical shape, the machinist works in opera houses, concert halls, theaters, film studios, TV sets and workshops.
The machinist's role and missions
He's in charge of the camera, and more specifically of its mounting systems and any movements it may make. In the case of dollies, for example, he sets up and pushes the dolly during shooting. His responsibilities can range from a simple camera stand to the most technologically advanced crane or dolly systems.
His work requires a good understanding with the cameraman, and even with the cinematographer, since he is in charge of camera movement and thus, in practical terms, of creating the frame desired by the cameraman or director. He is also responsible for the rigging systems used to install the lighting, so he is also in direct collaboration with the cinematographer.
