The assistant director ensures the smooth running of a film or TV shoot.
The role of an assistant director on a film includes monitoring daily progress against the shoot's production schedule, organizing logistics, preparing daily call sheets, controlling the cast and crew and maintaining order on the set.
Role and missions of the Assistant Director
The assistant director's work begins well before shooting begins. He or she is responsible for scouting locations, drawing up the sequence and technical sheets, listing the people present (technicians and actors) and the sets to be used, as well as managing the day-to-day schedule.
His presence on the set is indispensable, and his responsibilities are essential to the smooth running of the company. On financially important productions, he or she is assisted by a 2nd assistant director, or even a 3rd assistant director, in charge of managing the actors, for example.
During a TV show, he's physically present on the set, in constant contact with the director, who gives him instructions via headphones. He or she must be able to deal with all the hazards and unforeseen events of the shoot.
