In both television and film, the camera operator is responsible for framing the image. He or she enhances the mise en scène by mastering camera movements and shooting techniques.
He or she works closely with the director of photography (cinematographer) and applies the director's instructions to artistically translate the project's intentions.
At ESRA, we train students in the technical and artistic skills essential to this profession. You'll learn about the tools, filming methods and real-life production conditions that give you access to the various professional opportunities in framing.
Role and tasks of the cameraman
The cameraman is responsible for the artistic composition of the shots. He or she is only involved at the moment of shooting, although a good knowledge of the script and prior clarification of artistic intentions with the director are always necessary. He or she ensures the fluidity of camera movements (panoramic, floor or shoulder-mounted tracking shots, etc.) in accordance with the film's technical layout and the rhythm imposed by the director.
He works closely with the director and cinematographer for the artistic part of his work, and with the machinery team for the technical placement of the camera, in particular for the installation of the camera stand and dollies.

The cameraman's role during editing
Together with the director, he takes part in setting up the scenes, and during rehearsals has a say in how the actors move around the set, as well as their positioning in relation to the camera. For several decades, he was the film's first spectator, even before the director, but this privilege is now being challenged with the development of control monitors now scattered all over the set.
Nevertheless, he remains responsible for the technical quality of the frames, and must know how to control the direction of the actors' gaze in relation to the camera, to ensure the best possible fluidity in connecting shots.
