Role and missions of the Layout Designer
The layout artist is an essential stage in the production of a 3D animated film. He or she is responsible for setting the scene before the final animation work. In concrete terms, this means choosing camera angles, determining the positions of characters and objects in space, and establishing the rhythm of sequences. The layout is therefore a simplified version of the film, a sort of animated draft that guides the artistic and technical teams.
This role requires both an artistic sensitivity for composing images and a technical understanding of production constraints. The layout artist is at the crossroads of storyboarding and animation.

Key knowledge to master
- Proficiency in 3D staging software (Maya, Blender).
- Understanding cinematographic language and framing.
- Notions of editing and a sense of visual rhythm.
- Animation skills to anticipate movements.
- Ability to collaborate with directors and storyboarders.
He interacts with the directors, storyboarders and animators. His work serves as the basis for the entire animation team, ensuring the fluidity of shots and the coherence of space.
In the production chain, the layout is crucial, as it transforms the storyboard into a legible, technically usable animated sequence. Without it, animation loses precision and efficiency.
At ESRA, the ESRA Animation curriculum trains for this profession by developing mastery of 3D tools and an understanding of visual storytelling.
