The layout artist sets the scene for each shot in an animated film before the final animation is created. Using the storyboard as a guide, the artist positions the virtual camera, selects the frame and focal length, places the sets and characters, and determines the camera movements and the duration of the shot.

What does a layout graphic designer do?

Layout, storyboard, or animation: What's the difference?

Who does the layout graphic designer work with?

Down the line, his shots move on to animation, then to lighting, rendering, and compositing. He consults with the animators when a shot interferes with the action, and with the studio’s technical teams, who manage the production pipeline.

What skills do you need to become a layout graphic designer?

You need a real understanding of filmmaking: the frame, the focal length, the camera movement, and the continuity between two shots. In an animated film, the layout artist plays the role of the cinematographer: he decides what the camera shows.

You also need to be proficient in 3D software, such as Maya or Blender, be able to read a storyboard and an animatic, and work quickly, since a film consists of hundreds of shots.

In the animation film industry, the minimum salary for an experienced layout artist is €604.44 gross per 35-hour workweek under a standard fixed-term contract, or €2,619.25 per month. Under a permanent contract or a fixed-term contract governed by general labor law, the salary is €2,068.65 per month.

What kind of education do you need to become a layout graphic designer?

This profession requires training in animation filmmaking, which teaches both the language of film and 3D tools. As with other animation professions, a demo reel is crucial for landing your first job.

At ESRA, the ESRA Animation program is a three-year course leading to a state-accredited “ degree ” degree at the Bac+3 level, with more than 700 hours of instruction per year in 2D and 3D animation: art direction, character design (including rigging, textures, and lighting), storyboarding and layout, and the production of an animated film.
