Role and missions of the 3D Animator
The 3D animator is the artist who brings virtual characters, creatures and objects to life. Thanks to their work, protagonists breathe, move and express emotions. In an animated film, video game or advertisement, their role is to translate narrative intent into believable, expressive movement.
3D animation is a profession that requires artistic flair, keen observation of life and technical expertise. The animator must understand the psychology of the characters and transcribe their personality through their gestures and expressions.

Key knowledge to master
- Observe and understand human and animal movement.
- Proficiency in animation software (Maya, Blender, 3ds Max).
- Notions of acting and body expression.
- Knowledge of animation principles (anticipation, arcs, exaggeration).
- Sense of narrative and rhythm.
The animator works closely with riggers, modelers and directors. He receives the prepared rigs and uses them to animate the characters according to the storyboard and layout.
In the production chain, the 3D animator occupies a visible and decisive position: he's the one who transforms a static model into a living, expressive character.
At ESRA, the ESRA Animation course immerses students in the practice of animation, with an approach combining observation, acting and software mastery.
