Compositing graphic designer

The compositing artist—also known as a compositor or compositing graphic designer—works at the end of the production process for a shot. They bring together elements produced separately—characters, sets, effects, lighting, and live-action footage—and blend them into a single image that is consistent in color, lighting, and depth.

What does a compositing artist do?

He receives the elements of a scene as separate layers: the character, the background, the shadows, the reflections, the smoke or rain, and sometimes footage shot against a green screen. In his software, he overlays them, trims them, corrects their colors, and adjusts their lighting so that they appear to belong to the same space.

He then adds the elements that make the image believable: depth of field, grain, lens flares, and atmosphere. He checks to make sure the shot blends seamlessly with the surrounding shots, then has it approved by the compositing supervisor, the supervisor, and the director.

In a live-action film, it also removes cables, filming markers, and other unwanted elements, and integrates computer-generated sets and creatures.

Compositing, rendering, or color grading: What's the difference?

Rendering calculates the images from the 3D scenes lit by the texture and lighting renderer. Compositing then assembles these images, layer by layer, to create the final shot. Color grading comes next: it harmonizes the colors of the entire film, shot by shot.

The collective bargaining agreement for the animation industry establishes a separate job category for compositing—ranging from assistant to supervisor—that is distinct from that of post-production.

Who does the compositing artist work with?

He works under the direction of the compositing lead and the supervisor, and follows the director's instructions. Early in the process, he receives work from the animators, lighting artists, and matte painters, who paint the digital backgrounds.

On a live-action film, he works with the visual effects supervisor, who is on set from the start of filming to prepare the composited shots. Afterward, he delivers his shots to the editing and color grading departments.

What skills do you need to become a compositing artist?

It takes a very keen eye for light, color, and perspective: compositing is all about tricking the eye. A background in photography and film helps you understand what makes an image look realistic.

You also need to be proficient in compositing software, such as Nuke or After Effects, understand how a 3D production pipeline works, and know how to work quickly, shot by shot, while taking feedback into account.

How much does a compositing artist earn?

In the animation film industry, the minimum salary for an experienced compositing artist is €581.26 gross per 35-hour workweek under a standard fixed-term contract, or €2,518.84 per month. Under a permanent contract or a fixed-term contract governed by general labor law, the salary is €1,908.06 per month.

The minimum wage for an assistant on a permanent contract is lower than the minimum wage (SMIC), which has been €1,867.02 gross per month since June 1, 2026: therefore, the minimum wage (SMIC) applies.

Activity depends on production volumes. According tothe CNC’s Film Production Observatory, 16 French-produced animated films were approved in 2025, a record high; the CNC also provided funding for 282 hours of animated audiovisual programming, down 10% from the previous year.

What kind of education do you need to become a compositing graphic designer?

This profession requires training in animation or visual effects, which covers the entire process of creating a 3D image, from modeling to rendering. As with other animation professions, a demo reel is crucial for landing your first job.

At ESRA, the ESRA Animation program is a three-year course leading to a state-accredited “ degree ” degree at the Bac+3 level, with more than 700 hours of instruction per year in 2D and 3D animation: art direction, character design (including rigging, textures, and lighting), storyboarding and layout, and the production of an animated film. What career opportunities and prospects are there?

Compositing artists work for film and animated series studios, visual effects studios, advertising agencies, and music video production companies. Career advancement typically leads to the position of compositing lead, and then to compositing or visual effects supervisor.

Among ESRA alumni, Mikaël Tanguy (ESRA 2004) was nominated for a César Award for Best Visual Effects in 2023 for *Novembre*, directed by Cédric Jimenez, for which he served as visual effects supervisor.
