Role and missions of the 3D Modeller
The 3D modeler is the artist who builds the characters, objects and environments of an animated film or video game. Working from visual concepts or drawings, they create realistic or stylized digital volumes that serve as the basis for rigging, animation and rendering.
3D modeling is an artistic and technical discipline that demands creativity, a sense of volume and mastery of digital tools. Each model must be faithful to the initial design, yet optimized for animation.

Key knowledge to master
- Proficiency in modeling software (Maya, Blender, ZBrush).
- Knowledge of human and animal anatomy.
- Sense of proportion and 3D topology.
- Ability to adapt environments, props and characters.
- Working closely with riggers and texturers.
The modeler works with the character designer to transform the drawings into usable models, and with the riggers to prepare the animation.
In the manufacturing chain, it is at the very beginning of the visual process: without 3D models, no animation is possible.
ESRA prepares students for this profession through the ESRA Animation curriculum, in which they learn to master organic and mechanical modeling.
