Matte painter's role and missions
The matte painter is a digital artist tasked with creating realistic or fantastical settings that are impossible to film. He designs complete environments, mixing digital painting, photography and 3D elements. His creations can be used to extend film sets, reconstitute vanished worlds or invent futuristic universes. In cinema, TV series and advertising, his work is essential to give visual scope to a production.
Matte painting combines artistic flair and technical rigor. The artist must compose images that are perfectly integrated into the shots, respecting perspective, light and the overall style of the film.

Key knowledge to master
- Excellent command of Photoshop and digital painting software.
- 3D skills for integrating elements (Maya, Nuke).
- A keen sense of composition, light and perspective.
- Ability to work with photographic references.
- Adaptability to the artistic style of the project.
The matte painter's role and missions
The matte painter collaborates with the art director, compositing artists and VFX supervisors. He also interacts with the directors to ensure that his sets match the film's overall vision.
In the production chain, its importance is considerable: it pushes back the technical and financial limits of filming. A simple set can be transformed into an ancient city or a distant planet.
At ESRA, the ESRA Animation course prepares students for this profession by developing the basics of drawing, digital painting, compositing and integration techniques.
