3D Rigger's role and missions
The 3D rigger is a specialized technician who brings virtual characters and objects to life by creating their digital skeletons. Thanks to his work, animators can manipulate models with fluidity and realism. Their role is to design skeletal systems, articulations and controllers that simulate the movements, expressions and deformations of characters. In the animated film and video game industry, he's an essential link between the modeler and the animator.
This profession requires both an artistic understanding of movement and advanced technical expertise in programming and 3D software. Riggers must anticipate the needs of animators and design robust, flexible rigs adapted to project constraints.

Key knowledge to master
- Proficiency in 3D software such as Maya, Blender or 3ds Max.
- Understanding anatomy and the mechanics of movement.
- Knowledge of scripting (Python, MEL) to automate tasks.
- Artistic sensitivity to adapt rigs to the style of the film.
- Ability to collaborate with modelers and animators.
Role and missions of the 3D rigger
The 3D rigger interacts primarily with modelers, who design the characters, and animators, who make them move. They also work with technical supervisors to ensure rig compatibility with the production pipeline.
Without rig, a character remains static and unusable. He is the invisible craftsman who brings heroes to life.
At ESRA, students can train for this profession via the ESRA Animation curriculum in 3D animation and visual effects, which develops the technical and artistic skills needed to become a rigger.
