In 2020, ESRA Bretagne is teaming up with some of Rennes' leading film screening structures: the Théâtre National de Bretagne (TNB), the Travelling Festival and the Lycée Chateaubriand, to program Masterclasses for directors, scriptwriters and producers.

The first Masterclass took place on Thursday January 9 at the TNB cinema, with the screening of " Riddles of The Sphinx" (1977) by Laura MULVEY and Peter WOLLEN. As a response to the essay " Visual Pleasure and Narrative Cinema" , in which Laura MULVEY analyzes the mechanics of the male gaze on women in Hollywood cinema, " Riddles of The Sphinx" proposes a different kind of cinema, an experimental, feminist cinema.

Following the screening, Fanny BUGNON, Senior Lecturer in Contemporary History/Gender Studies at Rennes 2 University, was on hand to discuss with the audience and students from the Lycée Chateaubriand and ESRA Bretagne the issues at stake today in the different view of society that cinema would enable women directors, among others, to construct.

In January and February, we'll be co-hosting two other events representative of these partnerships: on January 24, Philippe LIORET will preview his latest film " Paris Brest " at the TNB; on February 14, as part of the Travelling Festival, ESRA will welcome Lebanese director Wissam CHARAF for a Masterclass based on his films.
