The ESRA Group's Research Department, the Université Gustave Eiffel (LISAA) and the Institut Universitaire de France organized a study day on April 10 in collaboration with ESRA Côte d'Azur, at the Georges Méliès campus in Cannes.

Entitled Cinémas français et américain : critique et création (French and American cinemas: criticism and creation), it presented work in progress on the cultural transfer between the two countries, opting for a comparative history of production and criticism. It covered very different periods in history, from silent cinema to Avatar, and proposed models of explanation or interpretation for discussion between the speakers and the audience.

The following presentations followed in quick succession:
  • The impact of New Wave directors' cinephilia on their films. French and American cinema: recurring references (Cyril LAVERGER)
  • Black + Black = Color. D'une invention critique française à la découverte du film criminel en couleur par François TRUFFAUT, 1967-1968 (Marc CERISUELO)
  • Jean RENOIR, American period: The Southerner, 1945 (Alice BOUCHEY)
  • Young Mister Lincoln, 1939: reconsidering a John FORD "classic" in Les Cahiers du cinéma in 1970 (Marthe STATIUS)
  • Digital materiality and photographic ontology: the BAZIN-CAMERON dialogue - Avatar, 2009 (Mamadou SANKHARE)
  • Netflix and the French ecosystem (Bruno CAILLER)

The day was the first scientific collaboration between the partner establishments.
