Images hors la loi" conference organized by LIRCES at ESRA Côte d'Azur

21 June 2022

The "Images hors la loi" symposium organized by the LIRCES (Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Récits, Culture et Sociétés) of the Université Côte d'Azur and ESRA Côte d'Azur took place from June 1 to 3.

As part of its research policy, ESRA Côte d'Azur has been collaborating with LIRCES since 2014. This laboratory reflects on the evolution of professions and techniques in relation to different forms of writing, as well as their interactions in the field of image and sound. Following a first symposium in 2016 dedicated to representations of cinephilia in cinema, and a second in 2020 entitled "Cinéma opérateur poétique", this event marks the continuation of scientific cooperation between ESRA Côte d'Azur and the Université Côte d'Azur (UCA), of which the school is an associate member.

After the opening screening of Paul CARPITA's film Le Rendez-vous des Quais , which was banned when it was released in 1955, two days of presentations followed at the school and at the Cinémathèque de Nice. The speakers highlighted the fact that today's films are produced outside a legal framework, finding their audience in circuits that are often clandestine. Some of these films reflect a militant approach, others a desire for transgression, or even commercial interests fed by certain audiences' taste for illicit works.
