Charles NEMES, director and screenwriter, came to talk with ESRA students on the occasion of the ESRA Thursday on February 25, 2021.
Born into a family fond of popular cinema, he discovered cinema and the desire to become a director through his high school's ciné-club. Attended by the Splendid troupe, they struck up a friendship and shared the same mentality: humor and irony, which have been the guiding principles of his film career. He co-wrote and directed his first feature film, " Les héros n'ont pas froid aux oreilles", with Gérard JUGNOT. Charles NEMES was driven and supported by his contacts, with whom he learned cinema on the job. As cinema was less strictly organized in its early days, he took on different roles, becoming a versatile sound and editing technician, camera assistant and second assistant for various positions.
Charles NEMES also works for television, directing several adaptations of Maigret and four seasons of the H series with Eric & Ramzy. The two actors invited him to direct his greatest success, La Tour Montparnasse Infernale . Charles NEMES gave the students a behind-the-scenes look at the making of the film, which was atypical for its time, with big budgets, special effects, green backgrounds and little-known actors. For the director, comedy is a serious business in cinema: you have to like the actors, and your relationship with them has to be the best it can be. The duo Eric & Ramzy have a great sense of situation, as he recalls from the scene in the air duct.
The director continued his career with other comedies, directing Omar & Fred and Bruno SALOMONE in Le carton and Au bistro du coin. Healso directed the second installment of the Caméra Café series The Seminar with Bruno SOLO and Yvan LE BOLLOC'H. Charles NEMES advises students to do the readings with the actors beforehand to optimize the shooting.
