Students from ESRA Cinema and ESRA Sound at the Paris, Nice, Rennes, and Brussels campuses have arrived in Beijing to participate in the official launch of an ambitious documentary filmmaking program organized in partnership with the prestigious Communication University of China (CUC). This initiative marks a new milestone in the development of the ESRA Group’s international collaborations and illustrates the two institutions’ shared commitment to training future audiovisual professionals through hands-on, intercultural, and resolutely internationally oriented experiences.
The opening ceremony, held on the CUC campus, brought together students, faculty, and representatives from both institutions. It officially kicked off two weeks of documentary filmmaking, during which French and Chinese students will work together to produce several short documentaries focusing on the landscapes, people, and profound transformations of the regions traversed by the Yangtze River.
A journey into the heart of contemporary China
Much more than just an educational exercise, this program offers a true immersion in contemporary China. After several days of preparation in Beijing, students will be divided into Franco-Chinese teams before traveling to three iconic cities along the Yangtze River: Nanjing, Wuhan, and Chongqing.
These regions, all marked by a rich history and significant economic and cultural development, will serve as the backdrop for their documentaries. Each team will meet with local residents, observe local ways of life, explore the social, cultural, and environmental realities unique to each region, and craft an original documentary narrative based on these interactions.
This field experience will allow students to develop their observational skills, their storytelling abilities, and their approach to documentary filmmaking, while adapting to a different cultural environment. They will learn to work with new partners, overcome language barriers, and pool their artistic sensibilities to tell universal stories.
An artistic collaboration between two leading film schools
The project is based on a simple principle: bringing together students from two of the top film schools in their respective countries to work together. Each team will consist of French and Chinese students with complementary backgrounds, thereby fostering the exchange of expertise, work methods, and creative approaches.
Students from ESRA Cinéma will contribute their experience in documentary writing, filmmaking, and artistic direction, while students from ESRA Son will apply their technical skills to sound capture, ambient sound recording, and sound editing for films. For their part, students from the Communication University of China will share their knowledge of the region, local culture, and Chinese audiovisual production.
This collaboration will allow everyone to enrich their professional practice while discovering new ways to approach an audiovisual project. Beyond technical skills, participants can also look forward to a truly enriching human experience, based on listening, trust, and collaboration.
The Documentary as a Universal Language
Documentaries were the obvious choice for this program. Through its ability to observe reality, give a voice to local residents, and tell authentic stories, this film genre serves as a powerful tool for dialogue between cultures.
As they travel along the Yangtze, the students will explore the life stories, local traditions, urban changes, economic activities, and environmental challenges that shape the regions through which the river flows. Each film will offer a unique perspective on these areas and highlight the diversity of the realities they encounter.
This approach will also allow students to develop the essential qualities of a documentary filmmaker: curiosity, active listening, adaptability, keen observation, and respect for the people being filmed.
International Distribution for Student Productions
At the end of the program, the documentaries produced will be featured in a special broadcast on TV5MONDE and CGTN (China Global Television Network).
This international broadcast represents a rare opportunity for young directors, cinematographers, sound engineers, and editors who are still in training. It will give their work visibility among an international audience and highlight the quality of the work produced during these two weeks of production.
For students, this prospect provides additional motivation. Producing a film intended for distribution beyond the academic setting requires meeting high professional standards, both in terms of storytelling and technical execution.
A program produced by the CGTN teams
The entire program will also be subject to editorial oversight by the CGTN teams.
Journalists will accompany the students throughout their journey, from the initial planning meetings through the various stages of filming in the three host cities. Location scouting, interactions with residents, artistic decisions, technical challenges, and moments of collaboration between French and Chinese students will be documented to capture this human and educational adventure.
